'NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL FEMALE RAGE' an exhibition by Zoe Williams and Blossom Robertson
Artist Statement
The works in this exhibit were born from the frustration that women collectively feel by merely existing in a patriarchal society. Throughout history, stereotyping, objectifying, forced gender roles, shame, and the devaluation of competence have been used to impose systemic inequalities. Most of us internalize and develop anxiety, depression, and lowered self-worth. The demonizing and diminishing of women has had a lasting effect; to this day, we still deal with gender based violence, wage gaps, and lack of control over our own basic bodily rights. The media and capitalism use these same tactics to keep us divided and consuming to try and fill the void they created. Using a pop style, nostalgia, and “pretty colors,” this show is a defiant Fuck you to those who think a woman with an opinion and a backbone is “aggressive”.
FUCK THE PATRIARCHY. GIRLS TO THE FRONT.
Artist Bios
Zoë Williams (she/her/hers) has lived her entire life in Clarksville, TN. Growing up in competitive dance, then moving to technical theatre, she’s always had a creative outlet, but this is the first time she’s created art pieces for that outlet. It was a difficult task to dig into her psyche and create works that represent the repressed emotions of the societal problems she’s grown up with, i.e., being judged and critiqued her entire life, growing up as a girl in this red state, and being a queer woman in a cis, straight, male-dominated world. She’s not one to talk about politics, but she will create something that will make others think about them. She graduated with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts of Tech & Design from APSU’s Theatre department. She currently works at the Roxy Regional Theatre in downtown Clarksville, where she builds the sets for the plays and musicals they put on. She loves to put different easter eggs in the design where she can, which she does in some of her works here as well. You can follow her on Instagram @zoeewilliamss_
Blossom Robertson (she/her/hers) is a multi-medium visual artist. Originally from Tacoma, Washington, she has resided in Clarksville since 1996. She attended APSU’s fine arts program in the early 2000's. Blossom is open for commission work. Follow her on Instagram and Facebook, @wildflowerrobertson
